Often described as “patriotic month,” September is one of the most interesting times to visit Belize as the country celebrations the longest holiday season in Central America.

Each year, the country’s National Celebrations Commissions sets a theme to guide the tone of the festivities. In 2018, the theme will be “Belize Da Fi Wi – Now & Forever, 8867”.

September 10

Throughout September, Belizeans working abroad return home to their native land to reunite with friends and family, giving the entire month a festive flair. The events kick off in full gear starting on September 10 with the national holiday known as St. George’s Caye Day.

In 1798, a ragtag group of English settlers and British naval vessels won a crucial victory over a Spanish fleet in the waters offshore of St. George’s Caye (islands are known as “cayes” in Belize). As a result of that victory, Belize became the only English-speaking country in Central America.

Every town and village commemorate this important historical battle with parades, street dancing, recitations of patriotic poems, and lots and lots of live music. Families gather for picnics or to admire the many flowering plants that begin to bloom at this time. Many foreign visitors find themselves being asked to tag along as everyone is encouraged to celebrate Belize during September.

September 21

The celebrations continue for the next two weeks, culminating in a tremendous show of patriotic pride on September 21, the day that Belizeans celebrating gaining full independence from Great Britain in 1981.

Locals bedeck themselves in the national colors of red, white, and blue, and there are parties, concerts, games, and parades all across Belize on September 21. Big name acts play for enthusiastic crowds in the larger cities and locals take advantage of the excellent weather to swim in the Caribbean, visit popular sites like ancient Maya ruins, and partake in delicious home-cooked meals.

And just like the Fourth of July in the United States, Independence Day in Belize finishes with a tremendous flourish of colorful firework displays.

Whether it’s the fabulous weather, the throngs of happy Belizeans celebrating their patriotic pride in their country, or all the games, parades, and concerts, September is definitely an excellent time to visit Belize.
