If you have ever spent time in Belize, you have probably heard about the Baron Bliss lighthouse or the annual sailing regatta held in Baron Bliss’s honor.
Who Was Baron Bliss?
His full name was Henry Edward Ernest Victor Bliss, and he was a member of the English aristocracy. Bliss was an avid yachtsman and fisherman despite suffering from the effects of polio. He sailed and fished from a specially designed boat that could fit his wheelchair.
In 1926, Bliss sailed his yacht into Belize. He never went on land, but he met with local fishermen and others who came to the boat to talk with him. Bliss fell in love with the beauty of Belize and the charm of its people. That love endured until his death a few months later. In fact, his will stipulated that he be buried in Belize.
An Unusual Bequest
Bliss left his fortune to the citizens of Belize. In his will, he established a charitable trust for the benefit of all Belizeans. He set it up so that only the interest could be used, which ensured that the fund would continue to grow and thrive.
He also added some unusual requests:
- The money could be used on agricultural and vocational schools but not academic schools.
- The people of Belize must erect a lighthouse and hold a yearly regatta in his honor.
- The money could not be used for churches or dance halls.
Belize’s Benefactor
The lighthouse is an enduring symbol of Bliss’s great love for the Belizean people. It’s also an unusual architectural curiosity.
