The world’s most popular publisher of travel guides, Lonely Planet, has just selected Belize as a top 10 destination in the category of travel bargains for the budget-conscious. Belize was the only country in Central or South America to make the list.

If you plan on visiting Belize in 2017, here are some of the best things to see and do:

Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave

Once used by ancient Maya priests to conduct terrible human sacrifices, Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave lay undisturbed for more than 1,000 years, giving visitors the chance to witness artifacts, religious objects, and human remains offered up to the gods during a time of civil strife and war.

Scuba Dive

Belize is a world-class destination for scuba diving thanks to its varied marine landscapes and abundance of fish, anemones, sea grasses, amphibians, and mammals.

Snorkeling

Strap on your flippers and mask and be prepared to marvel at the rainbow of colorful marine fauna and flora that inhabit the islands, atolls, and reefs of Belize.

Visit an Ancient Maya Site Like Altun Ha or Xunantunich

Built thousands of years ago, magnificent Maya sites like Altun Ha and Xunantunich still dominate the landscape. Indeed, the tallest manmade structures in the country are found at ancient sites like Altun Ha and Xunantunich.

Visit the Belize Zoo

Founded as an animal rescue center in the 1980s, the Belize Zoo is the country’s premier education center for indigenous wildlife in Belize. The Belize Zoo is home to hundreds of native animals, including harpy eagles, tapirs, and jaguars.

Visit the Community Baboon Sanctuary

Known locally as “baboons”, black howler monkeys are some of the most iconic animals in Belize. The Community Baboon Sanctuary is a great place to learn about and see these magnificent animals.
