When the school year ends, parents of children between the ages of 9 and 14 may face a conundrum: keeping youngsters busy and engaged throughout the summer. This is no insignificant task, say psychologists who stress the value of summer camps as a way to engage kids and help them become independent and self-confident adults.
Away from the influence of media and parents, children are free to explore new ideas and interests, hone their social skills and move toward independence and empowerment while they have fun doing age-appropriate activities.
With this mission in mind, Belize’s Black Orchid Resort in collaboration with Escape Youth Enterprise (EYE) will host a summer camp for children within this age group under the theme “Keep their eye on the prize,” to remind parents and kids that a summer spent learning, bonding and doing creative things and activities can lead to a more successful future.
“Parents looking for a way to challenge their youngsters this summer will find within the structure of our program a wealth of benefits during this 5 night/6 day all inclusive getaway hosted by Black Orchid Resort,” explains Diane Robateau, the founder of EYE. “Children attending camp between July 15th and 20th will make memories that are guaranteed to last a lifetime.”
Every child receives a signature camp t-shirt, three meals and snacks plus planned activities that include educational events, arts and crafts and sports, all overseen by trained counselors. But it’s the life skills campers learn that are likely to make the biggest impression on the boys and girls taking part in this program. “Children between the ages of 9 and 14 are vulnerable to peer pressure and other stressors,” says Robateau, “thus our program is structured to give campers opportunities to grow and build resiliency during their stay at Black Orchid Resort. Attendees learn to problem solve, weigh decisions and risks under the watchful eyes of highly-trained staffers.”
The collaboration between Black Orchid Resort and EYE, a program of Mental Health Global Service Foundation (MHGSF), offers children structure in a non-threatening environment where they can play and learn through courses and activities that enhance wellness, positive relationships and leadership skills.
“Campers will learn public speaking, goal setting, conflict resolution, money management, and basic self-defense skills. The older children (ages 12 to 14) will learn basic CPR techniques,” adds Robateau. “But it’s the confidence they all acquire that will serve these kids best as they grow up, in addition to making friends, mastering leadership skills, developing interpersonal relationships and gaining the independence they need to make proper choices.”
