What to Do & Where to Go: Belize in December

October 18, 2024

If you are looking for places to spend your December vacation, Belize is an ideal destination. If nothing else, it gives you a chance to enjoy warm temperatures without needing to really flex any proficiency in Spanish; the country’s official language is English. While that might not be motivating by itself, below are many activities that you can partake in during a December trip to Belize.

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling Around Belize’s Barrier Reef

Belize features over 200 miles of coastlines, atolls and a coral reef saturated with a daunting array of marine life. The Belize Barrier Reef is truly a site worth seeing no matter when you visit Belize.

Visit an Ancient Maya City

Belize was once the dominant region of the enigmatic Maya civilization. These days, visitors are free to explore the past, examining locales like Altun Ha, Caracol and Xunantunich.

Explore Sacred Maya Caves

Belize is home to a wide variety of biomes, including thousands of caves. Among the most prominent of Belize’s caverns would be Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave (ATM Cave), a site once used for ritual sacrifice by Maya high priests.

Check Out the Lush Belize Jungle

Belize’s jungle is worth a trip for anyone with even the remote of interests in birds. Touring this sort of terrain also gives you a fair workout from all of the hiking as you trek through proper jungle and rainforest.

Check Out a Lit Boat Parade

Ambergris Caye is the launching point for a flotilla of illuminated seacraft treading along the northern part of its island and well past San Pedro. This annual event only happens on the first Saturday of December.

Christmas Day Events

Christmas afternoon is when the Garifuna community of Dangriga performs a Jankunu dance. Later on, a Grand Ball is held, showcasing a variety of formal dance styles. Elsewhere, 24 Maya performers reenact a traditional ceremony known as the “Deer Dance” while clad in a variety of different masks.

Las Posadas

Anyone interested in the Catholic faith might be interested knowing that December 16 features a parade dedicated to Mary and Joseph. Said parade tours throughout town in order to reenact the couple’s quest for a room.

If any of this sounds at all appealing to you, you will need a place to stay. To that end, consider Black Orchid Resort for all of your Belize vacation needs.
